Third grade is the year multiplication arrives — and it's one of the most important math milestones of elementary school. Multiplication is the foundation for division, fractions, area, and nearly all the math that follows. Here's how it's taught in the classroom, in the order skills build, so you can help your child learn it with understanding instead of stress.
Start with what multiplication means
Before any facts get memorized, multiplication should mean something concrete: equal groups. 4 × 3 is “4 groups of 3,” or “3 added 4 times.” Kids who understand this can rebuild a fact they forget; kids who only memorize have nothing to fall back on. Spend time early with real groups — 4 plates with 3 grapes each — and with arrays (rows and columns), which are how multiplication is pictured all the way up through algebra.
The order to learn the facts
Don't learn the facts 1 through 12 in order — learn them from easiest to hardest so confidence builds:
- ×2, ×5, ×10 first — these connect to skip counting your child already knows.
- ×1 and ×0 — quick rules: anything times one is itself; anything times zero is zero.
- ×3 and ×4 — build on doubles (×4 is double-double).
- ×9 — use the finger trick or “ten groups minus one group” (9 × 6 = 60 − 6).
- ×6, ×7, ×8 last — the trickiest, but by now most are covered by facts your child already knows (order doesn't change the answer, so 7 × 3 = 3 × 7).
This sequence means that by the time you reach the “hard” facts, only a handful are genuinely new.
How to build understanding (not just memory)
- Skip counting: count by 3s, 4s, and 6s out loud and clap the beats.
- Draw arrays: 3 rows of 4 dots — then count to confirm 12.
- Equal groups with objects: coins, blocks, or snacks in matching piles.
- Fact families: show that 3 × 4 = 12, 4 × 3 = 12, 12 ÷ 4 = 3, and 12 ÷ 3 = 4 all live together. This links multiplication to division early.
Practice that actually works
Short and frequent wins. Five to ten minutes a day of focused practice beats a weekly marathon. Mix it up so it doesn't feel like a test: card games, “around the house” quizzing, and written practice that includes word problems — not just bare facts. Timed drills have a place, but only after the facts are understood; timing too early creates anxiety and guessing.
Common stumbling blocks
- ×7 and ×8 feel impossible. Focus practice there and lean on the commutative property (8 × 4 is the same as 4 × 8).
- Mixing up × and +. Slow down and ask “groups of, or added to?” Go back to objects if needed.
- Memorizing with no meaning. If facts evaporate over the summer, that's the sign understanding was skipped — reteach with arrays.
