Reading milestones by grade
- End of Kindergarten: Knows letter names and most sounds; can blend simple sounds; recognizes some sight words; understands print goes left to right.
- End of 1st grade: Reads simple sentences and decodable books; knows common sight words; uses phonics to sound out new words.
- End of 2nd grade: Reads fluently with expression; understands what they read; tackles longer words.
- End of 3rd grade: Reads chapter books independently; reads "to learn," not just "learning to read."
Warning signs to watch for
- Trouble learning or remembering letter sounds well past kindergarten
- Guessing words from the first letter or pictures instead of sounding them out
- Reading very slowly and laboriously, word by word
- Avoiding reading or getting frustrated/upset during it
- Difficulty rhyming or hearing individual sounds in words

- Consider an evaluation. If signs persist, ask your school or pediatrician about a reading or dyslexia screening. Early intervention is powerful.
