Writing is often the hardest subject to teach at home — it feels subjective, and many parents aren't sure where to start. But writing develops in a predictable sequence, and knowing what to expect at each grade makes it much easier to support. Here's how writing builds from kindergarten through 5th grade, and how to help at each stage.
The three types of writing kids learn
Under the Common Core standards, K–5 students work on three kinds of writing throughout elementary school: opinion (stating a view and giving reasons), informative (explaining a topic), and narrative (telling a story). The complexity grows each year, but the three types stay constant.
Grade by grade
- Kindergarten: Writing through drawing, dictating, and labeling. Forming letters. "Writing" a simple opinion ("My favorite is...") even if it's mostly a picture.
- 1st grade: Writing simple sentences. A few sentences on a topic or opinion with a beginning idea and some detail.
- 2nd grade: Writing complete paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting details. Beginning to revise.
- 3rd grade: Structured paragraphs with clear organization; opinion writing with reasons; simple multi-paragraph pieces.
- 4th grade: Multi-paragraph essays; opinion writing with evidence; organizing ideas with transitions.
- 5th grade: Well-organized multi-paragraph essays with introductions, evidence, and conclusions.
Frameworks that make writing teachable
- The hamburger paragraph: Topic sentence (top bun), details (fillings), closing sentence (bottom bun). Great for grades 2–3.
- OREO for opinions: Opinion, Reasons, Examples, Opinion restated. Perfect for grades 3–5.
- Draw-then-write for younger kids: drawing first organizes their thinking before they write.
How to help without crushing their confidence
- Focus on ideas first, mechanics second. Don't fix every spelling error in a first draft — it kills momentum.
- Let them talk it out before writing.
- Write together sometimes — model your own thinking out loud.
- Celebrate effort and voice, not just correctness.
