The most important factor: systematic phonics
Decades of reading research are clear — systematic, explicit phonics is the most effective way to teach most children to read. That means teaching letter sounds and patterns in a deliberate sequence, not relying on memorizing whole words or guessing from pictures. Any K–2 reading curriculum you choose should be phonics-based at its core.
What a complete K-2 reading program includes
- Phonological awareness: Hearing and playing with sounds — rhyming, blending, segmenting. This comes before print.
- Systematic phonics: Letter sounds → blends → digraphs → vowel teams, in order.
- Sight words: The high-frequency words that don't follow phonics rules, practiced alongside phonics.
- Decodable readers: Books written with controlled phonics patterns so kids can actually apply what they've learned.
- Comprehension: Asking and answering questions about texts, even simple ones.
- Writing connection: Practicing letter formation and early writing reinforces reading.
Questions to ask before choosing
- Is it phonics-based and systematic?
- Does it move at a pace you can adjust to your child?
- Was it made or reviewed by an educator?
- Does it include practice, not just instruction?
- Can you afford it — and reuse it for younger siblings?
