If you want to support your child's learning at home without sitting them at a table, these activities build real K-level skills in reading, math, science, and fine motor development, using things you already have around the house.
Reading & phonics activities
- Letter sound hunt: "Find something that starts with /b/!" around the house.
- Rhyme games: "I'm thinking of something that rhymes with cat..."
- Name building: Spell their name with magnetic letters, blocks, or stickers.
- Sight word hopscotch: Write words in chalk and have them hop and read.
- Read-alouds: The single most powerful early-literacy activity. Read together every day.
Math activities
- Snack math: "You have 4 crackers, I'll give you 3 more — how many now?"
- Counting collections: Count and sort buttons, coins, LEGO, or rocks.
- Shape scavenger hunt: Find circles, squares, and triangles around the house.
- Pattern building: Make color or object patterns and have them continue the pattern.
- Number line jumps: Tape a number line on the floor and jump to add and subtract.
Science & exploration
- Sink or float: Test household objects in a bowl of water and predict first.
- Nature walk: Collect leaves, rocks, and bugs; sort and describe them.
- Weather watch: Track the daily weather on a simple chart.
- Kitchen science: Baking soda + vinegar, melting ice, mixing colors.
Fine motor (handwriting readiness)
- Playdough, cutting with safety scissors, threading beads, using tweezers to sort small objects, drawing and coloring. All build the hand strength kids need for writing.
