Fourth grade math is a big step up. Kids work with much larger numbers, do multi-digit multiplication and long division, and go deeper into fractions and decimals. This is the year math starts to feel "hard" for a lot of students — here's what your 4th grader should know and how to support them at home.
What fourth graders learn (CCSS)
- Operations & Algebraic Thinking: Multi-step word problems; factors and multiples; number patterns.
- Number & Operations in Base Ten: Multi-digit multiplication; long division with remainders; place value to the millions; rounding.
- Number & Operations — Fractions: Equivalent fractions; adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators; multiplying fractions by whole numbers; intro to decimals.
- Measurement & Data: Converting units; area and perimeter; angles; line plots.
- Geometry: Lines, angles, and classifying shapes; symmetry.
Long division: the big hurdle
Long division is where many 4th graders get stuck — and where a lot of "math tears" happen. The key is the repeating cycle: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down. Teach it one step at a time, use graph paper to keep digits lined up, and start with easy problems before building to harder ones. Most struggles trace back to shaky multiplication facts, so shore those up first.
Fractions and decimals together
Fourth grade connects fractions and decimals for the first time (1/2 = 0.5 = 5/10). Use money and visual models — a dollar split into dimes and pennies makes decimals concrete. Equivalent fractions also become essential here; area models and fraction strips help kids "see" why 1/2 = 2/4.
How to help at home
- Lock in multiplication facts — they're the foundation for long division and fractions.
- Use graph paper for multi-digit operations to keep place values aligned.
- Make fractions and decimals visual with models and money.
- Build from easy to hard — confidence first, complexity second.
