Second grade math builds directly on first grade — but it moves faster and goes deeper. Kids work with larger numbers, start regrouping (carrying and borrowing), and lay the groundwork for multiplication. If your 2nd grader is struggling or you just want to support them at home, here's exactly what they should know and how to help.
What second graders learn (CCSS)
- Operations & Algebraic Thinking: Fluently add and subtract within 20; work with equal groups as a foundation for multiplication.
- Number & Operations in Base Ten: Understand place value to the hundreds; add and subtract within 100 (and up to 1,000), including regrouping.
- Measurement & Data: Measure and estimate lengths; tell time to the nearest five minutes; work with money; make simple graphs.
- Geometry: Recognize and draw shapes by attributes; partition shapes into equal parts (halves, thirds, fourths).
The big new skill: regrouping
The biggest leap in 2nd grade is regrouping — carrying in addition and borrowing in subtraction. This trips up many kids, and it almost always comes down to shaky place value. If your child struggles with regrouping, go back and make sure they deeply understand that 34 is 3 tens and 4 ones. Use base-ten blocks or bundled sticks to make it physical before the written procedure.
How to help at home
- Solidify place value first — it's the foundation for everything in 2nd grade math.
- Practice fluency with within-20 facts so mental math is automatic.
- Use money and time as real-world practice — counting coins, reading clocks.
- Introduce equal groups casually ("4 plates, 2 cookies each — how many?") to prep for multiplication.
